The Culture is Not Selling You a Savior

Again…using a tree as the metaphor for your life…Let’s say that the roots of your tree are covered in plastic; some sweet talking beautiful tree told you that to be loved you had to follow along with many of the other trees. It was a process established by man, not ordained by God. Your roots sure were pretty, sleeved in that beautiful plastic; most trees followed along with the practice, but in short order they didn’t seem to be whole trees and their growth was stunted. The vast nourishment available was not reaching their roots. Yes, you may find yourself surrounded in the great resources of the rainforest, but following the culture will only obstruct the available nourishment. What should you do?

To shed the plastic coffin blocking your nourishment, you first must admit you’re unable to save yourself and that you need help. Then you must turn away from what the world tells you is the truth, and turn toward Jesus Christ; this is repentance. To shed your plastic vanity, say LORD Jesus, I am a sinner! I am in your debt for I can’t save myself from myself, and I believe You have

“So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:12-17 ESV)

Tell Jesus that you desire to shed the cultural plastic that is currently embracing your roots, and that you desire to take in only the real “living water” found only within the rainforest of Christ. Tell Him you wish to be planted in His family. Mediate upon and repeat these two phrases: “LORD…Your water is my water!” and “My only nourishment, to which I grow everlasting, is from the bounty of Your eternal table.”
