Can We Get Back to Being an Honorable Country Again?

In an ESPN interview at Texas Motor Speedway September 21, 2008, drag racer John Force commenting about his upcoming first round race with competitor Cruz Pedregon, said:

“Cruz is a great competitor and on his game, he’s got a great hotrod, but I’ve got a great hotrod too, so it will be up to me. My legs are fixed [they were damaged from a horrific accident at the same speedway the year before], no more excuses. I’m going to give it all I have and if Cruz beats me then I just get whooped. But Cruzer, we’re gonna dance today! He will try to beat me and I will try to beat him…that is what we do.”

[checkout my article. “Force Honesty”]

As it turned out, John did beat Cruz that first round by 7/100ths of a second, only to meet up with his daughter, Ashley in round two. Ashley beat her dad off the line but disqualified by crossing the centerline, allowing John to go on to the third round. Tim Wilkerson beat John in round three and then beat Cruz’s brother Tony in the finals.

So, what’s the point you say?…what?…you don’t care about drag racing? That’s un-American! Just kidding…The point is this: We [the world] are dying in a state of “no responsibility” and the idiotic blame game! Just as spoiled children, if you don’t have what you want, you whine about it. You blame others for your situation, or blame the dog that ate your homework, the teacher yelled at you, you don’t have a father, and your sister hates you, and besides, it is too windy and cold out there! Businesses complain about competition, saying we need regulations, and then they complain about government regulations. The mother blames the father, the father blames the mother, and the child blames who ever is left standing. Families disintegrate, break up, and find themselves in even worse difficulty drowning in the quagmire of the whole multiple extended family fiasco. I suppose this stupid “blame game” started in the Garden of Eden as Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the snake; it has been going on ever since. God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden before they could eat of the Tree of Life, thus being condemned for eternity in their sinful state. This was an act of salvation by God, not anger but the desire for a loving relationship with His created.

Today, there is no patience, no “staying power”, and certainly no sense of humor. People expect perfection when it is clearly impossible; it is a world clearly unsustainable. One minor failure and people cry foul; is there an Edison out there willing to fail 6,000 times for a new idea? Frivolous lawsuits “steal” money from insurance companies who say it is cheaper to pay off the bandits rather than fight them; meanwhile the businesses pay the higher insurance price and pass it along to consumers. Higher education institutions sit on massive endowment accounts, pay salaries for non-teaching tenured professors, and whine to bureaucrats for tuition hikes that shut more and more people out of getting educations, thus adding to the dumbing-down of America.

I am trying to compare two sides here…what is wrong with America against what made America great. Is it idealism to think it possible to find our way back to be a strong honorable country again?

God’s First Gift – Asymmetry

Since God dwells in perfection, there must be a perfect environment that is beyond any of our categories of understanding. Knowing there was both matter and antimatter created, one can easily see that if you had a balanced situation then there would be a perfect symmetry between matter and antimatter, each cancels each other out and you have…? You cannot say there is nothing, because there is indeed something! Our definitions of reality breakdown at this point, but one thing is for sure, it has to be a perfect state of being. In this perfect realm, there is no need for forces or laws or time or any dimensions to measure with. Perfection! Our world is not this world so something must create an imbalance, an asymmetry, to have something physical that can be touched and sensed. To a finite creature, what good is a gift if you can’t see it or touch it or sense its beauty? Nature itself cannot create the imbalance, by definition, Nature doesn’t exist yet. Coming out of perfection, how can the asymmetry get started to have this physical gift for us? This action must take an all-powerful Creator. It is from this balanced perfection position that God created “ex nihilo”!

In the realm of balanced perfection, God has no need to “do” anything, unless God wants something. God, desiring to be in loving relationship with us, gave us a gift, a most unbelievable gift. It was God’s first gift to us, the gift of asymmetry! God kicked things off in the Big Bang, “Let there be light”, and continued His creative involvement by designing and creating every little quark to every large galaxy. This joyful creative effort includes you and me, my brothers and sisters.

We are so very limited in our ability to “see” the 7 divisions within the electromagnetic spectrum; we are limited to understanding only 3 physical dimensions with little sense of the miraculous. God’s creative actions are a reaching down to create a perfect “Garden” for us, for the purpose of seeking relationship with us. This creative effort is borne out of perfection, but it is not a “forced perfection” on us, where would be the love in that? We are not chained to a wall, with limitations only controlled by God. We are free to listen to the snake and eat that apple. God is not interested in having a relationship where He controls “the prisoners” of “The Garden”. We can blindly go day to day not listening to God’s instructions and doing our own thing, thus breaking trust and relationship. But beware, maybe one day you will look over your shoulder to see God’s bright light; what a wonderful light, a light you can believe in. I know God wishes to share a loving walk. It will be a loving walk in “The Garden” with us, oh, that would be so wonderful…that is, if we don’t mess it up again!

Asymmetry: The First Gift From God

Physicists are striving to find a Grand Unified Theory where all four forces in the Universe are one single simple beautiful physical law. Some would say that this, when discovered, would be the perfect law of the Universe, where everything is one with itself…the perfect symmetry. Balance. Many physicists today believe the Universe began in a state of perfect symmetry.

Perfect symmetry then is perfect order; if you move one object, even a fraction, you are out of balance. In a state of perfect symmetry, there is no time; any movement of time, even a millisecond, would alter the way things are from the way things were. It is important to understand this state of perfection, and to think of what could throw it off.

In the Universe, we know there are elementary particles that make-up all matter; and there are also antiparticles, exact opposites. When antiparticles meet their counterpart particle, they annihilate each other so everything is back into balance again. In a state of perfect symmetry of a so-called “nothingness”, all particles are matched with their own antiparticles; everything paired-up and in balance so there is nothing physical (having a measurable dimension) at all. Scientists will call these “virtual particle pairs”, also known as “quantum fluctuations” to which I frankly have a hard time understanding the term. As an architect, I prefer the particle-antiparticle symmetry form of understanding; I believe we are talking about the same thing.

Timothy Ferris says:

“Perfect symmetry may be beautiful, but it’s also sterile. Perfectly symmetrical space means nothingness. As soon as you introduce an object into that a space, you break the symmetry, creating a sense of location. There’s a place where the object is, and other places where it isn’t. And out of that comes tumbling all of the geometry of space as we know it.

Perfectly symmetrical time means that nothing can happen. As soon as you have an event, then you break the symmetry, and time begins to flow in a given direction. We live in a Universe that’s full of objects and events, and that means that the Universe is imperfect, and that the symmetries within the Universe that we live in are broken.

It may even be that we owe the vary origin of our Universe to the imperfection of the breaking of the absolute symmetry of absolute emptiness. There’s even a theory to this effect. It’s called vacuum genesis, and it suggests that the Universe began as a single particle arising from an absolute vacuum.” (“Creation of the Universe”, transcript p.17)

I believe Dr. Ferris is right on target in his first two paragraphs above; I can even go with most of his third paragraph. That’s pretty good considering the often-hostile disagreements we see between scientists and Christians. Let’s bring our focus into this third paragraph. Dr. Ferris is correct in saying the origin of the Universe is to break the absolute symmetry; after all as we said, with perfect symmetry you have nothing physical, so the symmetry must be broken somehow to have something. Those going along with this idea have given it the name “vacuum genesis”…a single particle started it all.

Wait a minute! By definition of perfect symmetry, you cannot have a lone particle! All the particles are paired up with their antiparticle; you have “nothing”…you can never have “something”. Yet, we know that today we indeed have “something”! Unless you are an ancient Gnostic believing that everything that is, is simply an illusion and unreal, we indeed have a physical reality. How can this be? We see as in the B.C. comic strip that we have vast differences in creation yet we have the common threads of the 4 physical laws, finite common elements, and male & female relationships between both mankind and animal.

If you start with “nothing”, some evolutionary process is never going to give you “something”…nothing from nothing is nothing! But again, we indeed have “something”, so the process must not be evolution, and we can’t say the Universe always has been here because we have agreed that we started with nothing. There are all kinds of made-up explanations for there to be a Universe; physicists will argue multiple Universes, anti-Universes or shadow Universes. Fundamentally, one will always find themselves back at the same point. What created the original asymmetry in order to have some reality? I can think of only one way that we can have physical reality, a physical creation; the perfect symmetry had to be tipped off balance. Now for the rhetorical question: Who could tip perfect symmetry off balance, or in other words, who could create asymmetry?

I believe that our first gift from God, before what we read in the Book of Genesis, where He separated light and darkness on that very first day, the first God gift is the gift of asymmetry. It could only be God to tip perfect symmetry off balance to move forward with His plan to build a Universe, a world, and then mankind for the sole-purpose and desire to be in relationship with His beloved. All that we see, whether right in front of our noses or through the largest telescope, was created as a loving gift for each and every one of us. What should our response be for such a wonderful gift?

The Ultimate Simple & Wonderful Grand Design

Today, there are hundreds of elementary particles that scientists have discovered; it is a building system providing different arrangements of the family of fundamental particles called fermions. For you nonscientist folks out there, stay with me on this, there is a point to gaining a simple sense of God’s infinitely small world.

It all started in 1805; the talk of atoms that is. English chemist John Dalton published his theory that matter was made of atoms. Through the 1930’s the atomic view was simply that all matter was made of 3 particles within the atom. These “elementary particles” (as they were thought to be at the time) were the proton (a particle with a positive electrical charge), the neutron (a particle with no electrical charge), and the electron (a particle with a negative electrical charge). The atom structure was one of a nucleus made up of protons and neutrons, and electrons circling in defined orbits. This view of the atom did not last long. By the 1950’s, scientists were discovering all kinds of smaller particles. Soon the “Standard Model” or “quantum field theory” was formulated between 1970 and 1973 to describe the fundamental interactions within particle physics with respect to 3 out of 4 fundamental forces in nature. The Standard Model remains in favor by many scientists as of this writing.

I am only scratching the surface on this subject of elementary particles. The point for my shallow treatment is only to open the eyes of the nonscientist to see that a whole grand “small world” is everywhere around us. Everything that is, has these exciting elementary particles. It is important to understand this “small world” structure to the best of our abilities if we want to appreciate God’s creation. Why, you ask? A person is not just flesh and bones, but a highly complex collection of very sophisticated systems that can love, think and reason. A flower is not just pedals, leaves, and a stem, but a highly complex collection of very sophisticated systems that can react to environment. Matter is not just a “thing” to be used or wasted, but a highly complex collection of very sophisticated systems made up of a very beautiful structure of mathematics and organization. So what do these examples point to?

The more you know about God’s creation, the more wonderful it becomes; it is far more beautiful, far more complex, far more exact, far more mathematical, and far more perfectly designed than we can ever possibly realize. That is why I can say with complete assurance that God created the Universe all the way down to these quarks! There is no evolution in nature! With the design set before us, there has to be a Creator! You don’t get a sophisticated perfect design as we have by happenstance! You don’t have to be a particle physicist to see the wonder of all creation and its awesome building blocks.

What is the “glue” that holds the different particles together and forms these building blocks? And what is going on when we see the particles becoming “unglued”? First, there are four forces in the Universe; gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force, and the weak force. We are all familiar with gravity; it holds things and people to the surface of the Earth and the planets in their orbits. The force of electromagnetism is found in magnets and the electrical charges. The strong force holds the nucleus of atoms together (the quarks into hadrons, and hadrons into nuclei). The weak force is involved in radioactive decay. The fact that the Universe is “glued” together and governed by only four forces is amazing in itself, but what if it could be even simpler? A Universe ruled by a single force would be the ultimate simple grand design! Scientists are trying to discover this grand design so they can try to understand it. Christians should be excited about this possibility because an ultimate simple grand design does not “just happen”, it does not evolve, and it hasn’t always existed in time. You have heard it said the simplest design is the hardest to achieve; like poetry, perfect words in a perfect order, perfect simplicity can never “just happen”. It is always masterfully designed down to the smallest details; and so it is with the Universe…masterfully designed down to the simplest elementary particles. This is why my Christian brothers and sisters would do well to absorb my superficial presentation of elementary particles to more fully appreciate its beauty and majesty. Such an ultimate simple grand design can only be God created and as only God can do…it would be beautifully created out of nothing! Ex nihilo baby!
